Frost

violin and viola - 8'00"

Frost - performed by Mark Menzies and Alex MacDonald

Frost was composed in response to a challenge to create a composition with only a limited set of pitches. The notion of writing with only a fixed set of pitches initially felt paralysing, as though the music was frozen. However, this limitation became the inspiration for the work and ultimately led me to select pitches for the piece that corresponded to each letter of the word 'frost.' The frozen landscape established at the outset of the work begins to 'thaw' as the pitch system gradually evolves and dissolves like melting ice.
